Losing weight for a woman with PCOS was the toughest journey I have ever embarked on. Losing was still fine, the tough job was the pace at which I gained back if I reverted back to my sluggish lifestyle and food habits. That is when I realized that I had to find alternatives to things which were absolutely bad for me and my health. So, the things where I ate the most amount of junk content were my snacking items. I don't know if I will have a partner to share this guilt, but I can never stop once I start gobbling on a packet of chips. Yes, I know it's an issue and I found my alternative to it and let me share with you all that it is Seeds and Nuts, yes you heard it right! Those good old things which we always have in our household(at least the nuts part) but never care to address.
Now let me tell you why my switch worked. Snacks are food items that you eat between meals, so the size of your snack should be smaller, also they shouldn't be very intense in the number of calories. But a packet of chips, or a few cookies, or a bar of chocolate doesn't; fit the criteria much. On the other hand, a handful of nuts or seeds will not only make you feel fuller for a longer time but will also check all the checkboxes for your fiber, vitamin, and mineral intake which your doctor talks about every time you visit.
Nuts and seeds are also amazing unsaturated fat sources. Now the question is what does that even mean? To understand that let's do some knowledge gathering. Fat sources can be broadly classified as saturated fat and unsaturated fat. Chemically speaking they are different from each other just by a double bond, but that's not very valuable to us. Saturated fat is mostly animal fat sources that tend to contribute to weight gain, chances of hypertension, diabetes, and whatnot if you have to believe the internet. But fat is an essential nutrient for our bodies because unlike the other nutrients our body is not capable of producing fat of its own. So external administration is our only hope.
So, replacing your saturated fat sources with unsaturated fat sources which nuts and seeds are an amazing source of, can help you with your weight loss or gain journey, reduce your risk of getting affected by heart diseases, diabetes, hypertension, and whatnot. But most importantly, switching to them as a healthy snack option, or decorating your smoothie bowl with them or even using them as seasoning could potentially help you take a small step towards healthy eating and healthy living and add some colors for that perfect Instagram worthy picture.
