When it comes to cosmetics, we go all gaga and mostly end up buying things that we don't need. But sometimes our preferred choices can be harmful to the environment and with some research we can easily choose a more sustainable alternative which not only is environment-friendly but can end up saving us a lot of money in the long term. So here are some items I do not buy anymore.
1. Cotton-pads
I was one of those individuals who would stock up on cotton pads even before my current stock ends, but I have finally broken up with them, and I couldn't be happier. Did you know cotton needs 1-5 months to decompose if disposed of and treated correctly!
How do I get rid of my make-up then? Well, I don't do too much make-up, to begin with, but for my lipstick or Kajol, I prefer using a reusable face towel after rinsing it in warm water and ta-da.
2. Razors
Yes, we all have one in stock for that emergency that might come up someday. But, let's agree that we don't like the poky aftershave part at all. I have started using an epilator now, which has proven to be a loyal friend even in those emergencies😜.
3. Foundation
Okay, this is one item that I have never bought to start with, but I have a story to share here. I went to buy a foundation this year for a close friend's wedding and thought it would be a piece of cake because the beauty industry has grown crazy big, right? I mean yeah! just not much on the correct shade and texture with being affordable. I have big pores, and no matter what I tried, I couldn't be okay with what I was getting for the hefty amount I was paying. That is when I heard about this wonderful product called 'BB cream' cheaper, lighter, and the shade is pretty wide-ranged, what more do you want?
4. One-time wear jewelry
When it comes to jewelry, I never needed an occasion to buy it. I was all Ariana Grande when it came to jewelry, 'I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it' and the cheaper, the better. But the reality hit me when I was de-cluttering my possessions. I had almost 50 pieces, which I never wore, even for once. I had just bought them because I could and had the money at that point. And the worst part was some of them have got tarnished from just sitting in my closet.
5. Nail-paints
People who know me will be laughing at me right now because they know how big of a hoarder I was when it comes to nail-paints. I was obsessed. Sometimes I felt like I needed to have all the colors possible. Nude, neon, neutral, you name it I had it. But over time, I reached my conclusions that maintaining longer painted nails is a hard job, and I am happy with my baby nails that kind of suits my baby hands.
6. Toners
They never did much for my skin even after judiciously using them for months. Then I did a little bit of research to understand how they work, and I found that they maintain the pH of your skin. So, unless you are using a face wash that has an active ingredient that works on a different pH from your moisturizer, you don't really need a toner.
7. Conditioners
Another product that never did much for me. My hair is naturally quite straight and frizz-free, so I never felt conditioner did any wonders for my hair. If I need some conditioning, I go for a hot oil massage 1 hour before shampooing or use an egg mask.
8. Loofah
Exfoliation is an important thing, but how effectively a loofah does it, is quite questionable. Yes, it's not just me, experts believe that as well. Moreover, it comes with a shelf life of 2 months, which makes it six loofahs a year, too much dumping. I chose the reusable gloves from the body shop, and they are amazing.
9. Variety of products that I don't really need
I always fell into the trap of buying products that I didn't need but picked up probably because I was in a bad mood or it looked it would work for me. For example, I suffered from hormonal acne for the longest time possible, and I would pick up some toner or face wash, which claimed it would fight acne. But, for a product to work on your skin, you need to give it at least 3-4 weeks of regular usage, I never cared to use it for that long, thus ended up spending a lot of money and dumping a lot of plastic both contributed to a lot of stress in my life and gave me more pimples.
10. The single area targeted product
These include a long list of products like hand cream, foot cream, eye cream, and whatnot. But when I looked at the ingredient list, it is not very different from the lotion or moisturizer that we use. So, when I have dry hands, I use my regular moisturizer and, it does the job pretty effectively.
Disclaimer: Some of the products in the aforementioned list might be your staple, and I am in no way discouraging you to buy any of the products. Over time I have realized they don't serve the purpose for me, and thus I don't buy them anymore. Let me know your thoughts!! Toodles!!
