Basics of Kitchen Gardening

I grew up in a household where my dad grew a lot of vegetables in our backyard, especially during the winters. Those vegetables not only tasted better than the ones that we bought from the market but also held an aesthetic value, as we have seen them grow in front of our eyes.

When I shifted to a flat in Pune, I never thought I could even grow a single thing here. But as it is well said,' If you have a will, you have a way.' I embarked on my journey of kitchen gardening with my very first Pudina plant.

Kitchen herbs are a lot easier to grow as compared to vegetables or legumes. So here are three plants that are super easy to grow and can be grown in just four simple steps.

Basil

The following steps do work for most of the herbs like pudina, Kadi leaves, thyme, oregano, etc.

1. Select a stem that has at least two nodes. Nodes are points from where leaves grow.

2. Roots start growing from the nodes so, make sure you remove the leaves from the node that you are going to place in soil or water for rooting.

3. For root generation, you can either place the plant in water or, you can plant it directly in moist soil. I prefer the water method, as I can see the roots grow this way.

4. Typically roots sprout within a week. Watering or change of water depending on the method chosen in the step above should be done on alternate days.

Cherry Tomato

Growing cherry tomato is relatively simpler than a regular tomato.

1. Cut a cherry tomato into half and place the tomato on a kitchen towel for the absorption of the excess water.

2. Create a small burrow and place one half of the tomato into the soil.

3. Cover the tomato with soil and water on alternate days.

4. Typically plants would sprout in a week or two.

Chilly

The below-mentioned steps can also be used to grow coriander and fenugreek.

1. Select a good looking dried red chilly.

2. Separate the seeds from the chilly.

3. Spread out the seeds in semi-moist soil and cover them up.

4. Water them on every alternate day to see plants sprout in a week to 10 days.
