Born to the mightiest of the Titans and the sun god Helios, Circe was
strange and powerless unlike her father. Her strange affinity towards
the mortal realm leads her to the discovery of her power - the power of
witchcraft, which could transform nemesis into a monster, mortals into
god or pigs to suit her needs.
Her power threatens even the mighty Zeus, which leads to her isolation on the island of Aiaia, where she acuminates her occult competency by casting spells, taming beasts, gathering strange herbs, and studying their mystical powers. But, when stranded alone on an island, even an immortal nymph has to face a lot of peril in the form of uninvited guests. Circe finds comfort when she meets Odysseus, they fall in love and spend a year on her island. She bears his child and risks everything in her power to bring this child up.
Miller does a brilliant job in depicting Circe not just as any other liminal greek goddess, but rather as a multifaceted and evolving character. Be it her kindness towards Prometheus or her benevolence towards Daedalus, her rage towards Scylla or her unconditional maternal ardor towards Telegonus, which would make her take the most difficult decisions of her life. Miller aims at bringing out a humanized version of a goddess which not only fulfills your mythological appetite but also melts your heart.
