Book Reviews: Palace Of Illusions - Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

This book has been really close to my heart for so many reasons yet strangely I read this book long after I anticipated to read it. I have read Mahabharata in so many different narratives, yet this book stands the favorite version not only for me but for so many avid readers I have come across so far.

The story revolves around the life of Draupadi, who I feel is such an important character, yet most of the Mahabharata I read and saw glorified only the men in the picture. From being born from the fire performed to obtain a male heir to the act of balancing the role of being a perfect wife to five husbands while her enigmatic friendship with Krishna blooms and her secret admiration to a mysterious man unfolds in the ever-manipulating hands of fate, Chitra paints a fiery, strong and beautifully redefined Draupadi and doesn't take a pitiful view towards her life. The book engages the readers impeccably, battering smaller details of the patriarchy throughout the story.

The growth of Draupadi's character and her thoughts are beautifully expressed and her realizations in the book feel like your own which is the most amazing part of Chitra's exemplary performance for me.
